Beauty Rx: Product MixingChristine Mikesell
Is there such a thing as a foundation that is long wearing AND luminous? We older ladies need the luminous look, but with staying power! Matte is not forgiving and luminous doesn’t last. I just don’t understand why a makeup company hasn’t jumped on this!! I’ve googled endlessly to no avail.
This is a bit of a tricky question. Foundations and how they wear can be pretty dependent upon your skin type, how you apply it, and even what you’re doing to your face throughout the day. Are you a toucher? Are you blotting throughout the day?
Personally, I’ve never found a luminous foundation that really worked and stayed put on my combination skin until lunchtime. Even with primer, the luminosity seems to make everything melt off my face a bit faster than a more matte formulation.
I think rather than finding a new foundation with a luminous finish, you should consider adding in additional products to the mix. Mixing in products such as a primer, a highlighter, or even using a concealer and BB cream mix instead of foundation would all be great options. Here’s a quick peek at a few of my favorite ways to custom mix, and some of my favorite products to use.
1. Primer and Foundation
While most of us use primer under our foundation, I like to mix a little in as well to customize the amount of coverage. Swap out a regular primer for a shimmer primer when you want a little extra something.
2. BB Cream and Concealer
I’m a big fan of BB Creams, and if you’re in search of more luminous coverage, I think this is the way to go. The coverage is typically lighter than a foundation, but more than a tinted moisturizer. This BB Cream from Pond’s also offers anti-aging ingredients and light diffusing particles to make your complexion more luminous.
There are a lot of options to customize a BB Cream to work better for you. For days that I need more coverage, I add in a small amount of a concealer that exactly matches my face. I love the Amazing Cosmetics concealer because it is well pigmented, so I only need a small amount, and there is a huge range of shades available. If I need to mattify, a few drops of MAC’s Skin Refined Zone can be mixed into the BB Cream. For a bit of shimmer a little highlighter can be added into the mix as well.
3. Concealer Plus Extras
Getting the perfect under eye area can definitely be a challenge for me, especially on days that I’m post-call. I can get a lot of phone calls all night long. Looking awake the next morning is definitely a challenge! While I always apply my concealer over an eye cream, I’ve found that mixing in a little more of the same cream to a pigmented concealer prevents creasing and can almost give a little bit of an airbrushed effect. On days that I need even more help, I’ll add in some highlighter as well.
