Becoming Rapunzel: Tips to Help You Grow Out Your Hair

After my recent drastic hair cut, it took a while to adjust to my shorter hair. I’ve adjusted to having one style and needing only 5 minutes to do my hair in the morning. But all it takes is a quick trip over to Pinterest, where there are many bloggers willing to inspire me! (Here are some of the hair styles that make me want to grow out my hair.)

I admit that I’ve bought into all of the images of cascading curls and 2 minute sock buns on Pinterest, so I’ve decided to grow out my hair! I’m lucky — my hair does grow very quickly, so it should be only moderately painful to resist the scissors during those awkward in between phases.

Hair follicles reside within your skin, and they are affected by the general health of the skin. Inflammation, infection, irritation — they'll all affect the rate of your hair growth. My favorite resource for keeping my scalp healthy is Dr. Cynthia Bailey's Skin Care Blog, and her how to treat dandruff post is full of information that will make your scalp happy and healthy!

    Try:
    Foaming Zinc Cleanser $11
    Scalp Scrubber $5

  • Pamper Your Scalp 3 of 10

Celeb stylist Troy Peppin says, "The best way to grow hair long starts with a healthy scalp. I recommend using René Furterer Complexe 5. Its special blend of essential oils containing orange and lavender increases microcirculation and stimulates growth. You can also give yourself a mini scalp treatment each night using a Mason Pearson brush before bed."

  • Good Nutrition Counts! 4 of 10
    3-nutrition

In order to grow your hair, you'll need to have some building blocks to make the hair. Nutritional deficiencies such as protein, vitamin C, zinc, and biotin have been found to affect the structure and growth of hair. You'll want to do this primarily through a healthy diet (you'll absorb vitamins better through food than a supplement). If you want to supplement, biotin was found to increase the rate of hair growth in multiple studies; you can read more about it in my biotin for nail and hair health post.

If you're interested in one of the many hair supplements, celebrity stylist and makeup artist Joshua-Myles Ristaino has a few recommendations. "Some of the best hair growth systems out there are Viviscal Professional Supplement Hair Nutrition Program or the Rene Furterer Triphasic Regenerating Treatment and 80 Concentrated Serum. Viviscal helps hair growth internally and the Rene Furterer helps topically!"

    Try:
    GNC Biotin Capsules 2500mcg $12.79
    Viviscal $39.99
Rene Furterer Triphasic Regenerating Treatment $77
Rene Furterer RF80 Concentrated Serum $67

  • Avoid Damage 5 of 10

"The best way to get hair to grow is to take care of it. People think their hair should grow when they are going over it with a flat iron a million times or ripping through it with a hair brush. Hair is fragile and should be treated that way," says Julia Nikic, the salon manager at Beauty First Unlimited in Louisville, Kentucky.

You should minimize the damage you do to your hair. Wash less frequently (dry shampoo is a wonderful thing), air dry if you can, and turn down the temperature on your heated styling tools.

  • Remember Heat Protection 6 of 10
    5-heat-protect

Frying your hair with a curling iron is a really great way to cause enough damage that your hair starts breaking off. (I might be speaking from experience here!) If you can curl your hair with less heat, do it! Keeping the temperature under 400 degrees is ideal. Use a heat protecting product every time you style your hair, even if it is just a quick touch up with a flat iron.

    Try:
L'Oreal Advanced Haircare Color Vibrancy Dual Protect Spray $6.99
Organix Brazilian Keratin Therapy Flat Iron Spray $5.99
Alterna Bamboo Smooth Anti-Breakage Thermal Protectant Spray $25
Nexxus Heat Protexx Heat Protection Styling Spray $12.99

  • Strengthen Your Hair 7 of 10

You really can affect the chemical structure of your hair to add strength and health.

"My favorite way to help get the hair to grow faster is adding mini amino acid treatments to the hair every 2 to 4 months," says Nadine Branch of Nadine's World, a salon in Costa Mesa, California. "This treatment strengthens the bonds of the hair to give the hair strands a chance to grow faster."

  • Yes, Trim Your Hair 8 of 10
    6-trim

Trimming your hair will not make it grow faster.

"Regretfully, your hair will grow at its normal rate until the end of time (about 0.5 inch per month)," says Crystal Casey of High Voltage Hair in Chesapeake, Virginia.

"But keeping it looking healthy is a big part of keeping your length if you're growing it out. Getting a trim every 4-6 weeks is no myth. Will your hair keep growing if you don't get it cut? Of course…it will just start to look like straw on the ends. Once a split end develops it just keeps splitting up the hair strand which is what causes that unhealthy straw-like look. If you trim every 4-6 weeks you won't have to cut off 3-4 inches every 6-9 months."

  • Intensive Treatments 9 of 10

Unfortunately, a daily conditioner is usually not enough to keep hair free from breakage. Using an intensive conditioning treatment a few times a week can help reduce breakage and keep your hair hydrated and healthy! I have a long list of favorite intensive hair treatment masks, but here are a few of my favorites.

    Try:
    Joico K-Pak Revitaluxe Bio-Advanced Restorative Treatment $5.59
Dermorganic Intensive Hair Repair Masque $16
    Aussie 3 Minute Miracle $2.97
Mark Hill MiracOILicious 2 Minute Intensive Treatment $11.99

  • At Home Hair Treatments 10 of 10

A quick glance at Pinterest will likely show you a ton of pins, like this pin, claiming a hair mask dramatically increased someone's hair growth. Usually there's some oil involved (yay for conditioned hair!), but the secret is cinnamon or mustard due to increased blood circulation to the scalp. I'm not certain if they truly do work, but there are some great at-home treatments that will help you condition your hair or skip shampoos!

    Try:
    Coconut Oil Hair Mask
Coconut Oil and Honey Hair Mask
    DIY Dry Shampoo
