Calling All Blondes: Why You Need to Start Using Purple Shampoo

What’s the first thing you think of when I say “brassy”? Certainly the word bombshell doesn’t come to mind! After I’ve bleached my hair, I love the bright vibrant color. The tone is so rich and cool. After a couple months though? Let’s face it: it becomes a bit brassy. My locks lose their luster, and it just starts looking pretty dull. So to breathe life back into my hair, I use purple shampoo twice a week.

What is purple shampoo?

It’s a deep purple shampoo that distributes purple pigment to neutralize brassy, yellow tones. Why? Let’s go back to the third grade for a second. By a show of hands, who can tell me what’s on the opposite end of the color wheel from purple? Oh yes, good job. It’s yellow! So to neutralize yellow hues, you’d color them with purple ones. Purple shampoo uses basic color mixing to hide those brassy tones. So when we wash our hair with purple shampoo, our hair absorbs a small amount of purple pigment, which cancels out red and yellow undertones, making your blue undertones higher. It basically brightens up the blonde by restoring your hair to its former cooler color.

How do you apply it?

You’ll want to rinse your hair in hot water before applying, as doing so will cause the hair shaft to expand, allowing for better depositing of the purple pigment. You’ll apply the shampoo liberally and let it sit for 1 to 5 minutes, depending on the brand and what the back of the bottle recommends. You’ll then rinse your hair in cold water, which will cause the hair shaft to close, sealing in the color and leaving it smooth and protected. Using a purple shampoo will not turn your hair purple. It’s just toning down the brassy hue. I like to mix my purple shampoo with my regular shampoo, as I find it’s less drying on the hair. I also really love purple conditioner, but I don’t love using purple shampoo AND conditioner; it’s either one or the other. If you ever overdo it, just rinse your hair and the purple pigment will fade out.

Why should I use it?

Using a purple shampoo can extend the life of your color. By extending the life of your color, your trips to the salon become less frequent and you put money back into your pocket. I think every blonde should be using a purple shampoo. Like I’ve already said, it’s just going to really brighten up that color, making it look like you’ve just come out of the salon. And really, who doesn’t want that?!

It was bad. And it stayed bad for a good long while. I literally remember having so much anxiety over my hair color that some nights I refused to leave the house. I felt like everywhere I went people were staring at my hideous hair. Up until then, I had been defined by my gorgeous blonde hair, and to have it taken away was so hard!

I spent months and months babying my hair. Using all the right products, not washing it too much or styling it with too much heat. I couldn't wait for my appointments at the salon, knowing that each time it was bound to get a little bit better.

I don't attribute my cooler tones to the purple shampoo. I was able to get this color back by being patient and just letting it grow out. I show you these pictures though, because I want those of you struggling with warm orangey hues to know that there is light at the end of the tunnel! While you can't go from orange to platinum by using purple shampoo, the purple shampoo will help. It will take the edge off and cool you down just enough to help you feel normal for a while!

Purple shampoo is amazing, and without it those 8 months would have been a nightmare!
