At the Emmy’s last week, Brooke Burke’s hair stole the show for me. She looked absolutely stunning in her Herve Leger dress. However, it was her soft updo that I haven’t been able to get out of my head. This style was the perfect balance to her dress, and it is one that should be easy to recreate at home. While it looks complicated, there is a lot of room for error in this relaxed style!
The Hair 1 of 6
Brooke's style was created by Jonathan Hanousek, who was gracious enough to share how he created the look.
Preparing The Hair 2 of 6
To create volume and body and hold, Jonathan applied Wen Nourishing Mousse to towel-dried hair. He used his fingers to create a side part and scrunched waves into the hair. The hair was blow dried with medium heat using a diffuser, touching the hair as little as possible while drying so that the waves stay silky and soft.
Define The Curls 3 of 6
Using a 1" curling iron, Jonathan refined the curls on the surface and around the face. "To maintain a natural texture, I curled each piece of hair in the direction it had dried." Next, he applied a dime size amount of Wen Finishing Treatment Crème throughout the hair to give definition and separation to the curls.
Twist Up The Hair 4 of 6
To provide a stable base for the updo, the hair was loosely gathered into a ponytail just above the shoulders. Jonathan twisted the pony up and pinned the pony band at the nape with bobby pins. He then wrapped up the remaining ends and secured with more pins, tucking one side loosely behind the ear.
Note that while expensive, these Bob Pins are the most heavy duty that I've tried! They'll hold an updo in place all night long without an issue.
Finish and Hold 5 of 6
"My tip is to always check in the mirror to make sure everything is balanced," says Jonathan.
To complete the look, pin up any stray curls that seem out of place, but don't fuss or strive for perfection. To ensure the hair stayed in place for the long night ahead, Stuck Up Mega Hold Hairspray was lightly sprayed over the hair.
The Complete Look 6 of 6
Brooke's hair is shiny and touchable, and while it works great with her gown, it would also be at home with jeans and a t-shirt! I'll be perfecting this look just as soon as my hair has grown out enough!
