Dustin Hoffman Offers Touching Thoughts on Beauty


I came across this powerful video from AFI this morning on Facebook. In it, Dustin Hoffman recalls his experience becoming a woman for his role as Dorothy Michaels in the movie, Tootsie. If you haven’t seen the movie, I highly recommend it. The movie was a comedy but Hoffman’s experience wasn’t exactly funny.

After seeing the screen tests of himself as a woman, he was a little taken aback that he wasn’t as beautiful as he hoped he would be. This led to some interesting emotions and thoughts on beauty. I urge you to watch it. In his own words, he had an epiphany and it’s really quite fascinating.

Dustin’s story actually brought me to tears. For a while I couldn’t figure out why but I realize now that it’s a powerful thing to be understood. The emphasis on beauty for females is a weight that we all carry. Almost makes me think every man should have to live as a woman for month or two. What a different world we might live in…
