There are several sea-inspired hair trends making a splash: fishtail braids, extra-long down-to-there hair (real or extensions), natural beach-y waves, and temporary hair color.
All of these lead to one conclusion: embrace your inner mermaid.
But no worries if your hair isn’t down to your fins. Mermaid hair will work on any length, long or short.
1. Waves — Start your mermaid hair look with understated beach-y waves. You can achieve waves using different techniques: the sock bun, using a curling wand, braiding dampened hair, or with sea spray. It takes some trial and error to see which techniques work best for you. And in some cases, a combination of a few will yield the best results. For the look above: apply Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray on dampened hair, let air dry, and add additional curls using Jose Eber’s Trio Curling Wand.
2. Color — Hair chalk or colored sprays can be used to add color. I prefer using Rita Hazan’s Pop Color Temporary Spray for several reasons: 1) it’s less messy 2) works on all hair colors 3) paraben- and sulfate-free and 4) washes out easily. For a touch of color, spray on ends of hair. For more contrast, twist individual strands and then spray.
