Bold Lips for Fair Skin

First off … what exactly is fair skin? In my world, having fair skin usually means that it’s light and not tanned. I would also describe fair skin as lovely and creamy. Fair skin is becoming increasingly popular as celebrities are endorsing the fight against cancer and avoiding exposure to the sun. Thankfully, being fair skinned is trending. Let us not forget: “Mirror mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all”? Fair skin is beautiful, and it’s something you should embrace. So how does one with such light skin rock a bold lip?

Just like everyone else … only badder.

I am obsessed with bold lips. Period. Nothing says you’re a strong confident woman like rocking a bold lip. If you’ve never tried a bold lip and you’re a little nervous about it, keep in mind that this isn’t a new trend. The world is used to seeing them, and now is as good a time as ever to give them a try!

So, you gorgeous ivory-skinned women, here are my tricks to rocking a bold lip:

Having confidence when you wear a bold lip is more important than what shade of lipstick you have on. It's more important than how you've applied it and what you're wearing. If you're going to wear a bold lip, you better be able to back it up and own those lips. You're basically telling the world that you know what you want and you're not afraid to get it.

  • Exfoliate and Prime 3 of 11

Exfoliate and prime your lips. In my opinion, there's nothing sexier than a bold lip. There's also no bigger turn off than having dry, flaky lips! Before anything else, exfoliate any dead skin and prime. If you don't have any special lip exfoliator, your tooth brush will do. However, I highly recommend the sugary lip scrubs from For Goodness Grape. It's amazing, all natural, and tastes delish! I also use the same primer for my face as my lips, but I've heard the MAC Prep + Prime works wonders.

Because everyone has different colored undertones, it's really hard to determine the color that would be perfect for you. My suggestion would be to head on down to the Mac counter or Sephora and just try a bunch of different colors on. Don't worry about what Glamour magazine says is the "in" lip color for the season. Choose a color that works on you, one that you can feel confident in. And if you have a bright lip color in your makeup bag that you've never really loved, there's no need to throw it out. Go ahead and top it with a gold gloss to warm and soften it, or add a pink gloss to cool it down.

Makeup Forever from Sephora has the coolest lipstick finder. You basically click on your shade of skin and your hair color, and then it gives you the perfect lip shades. Try it out — it's pretty awesome!

Remember that we're heading into fall, so those deep burgundies, wines, plums, and tomato reds are going to be all the rage. Fair-skinned Hayden looks gorgeous as ever with this bold lip. Her makeup is subtle, with light highlighting and contouring and some lashes.

This is a great fall color, the tomato red. I think Gwen is looking a little more pale here than fair, but you get the idea of how that bold lip can really pop.

This is such a beautiful everyday color. It's not the hot tomato red — it's bold yet soft. Love this look from Amanda.

  • Prevent Bleeding 10 of 11

If you've ever worn a bold lip without lining it or wearing some concealer outside your lips, you know what I'm talking about. The color you apply to your lips will bleed onto your skin making the lip look … well, messy. I like to line just the outside my lips with a light brown and then apply a little concealer around the border of my mouth. This will not only prevent bleeding, but it will push forward your lips, making them stand out even more.

It's important when wearing a bold lip that you aren't wearing heavy makeup anywhere else. Not only will it distract from your lips, but it'll look like you've had a little bit too much fun with your makeup bag. You want your lips to be the focal point. BAM! The goal with a bold lip is to not look like you're wearing loads of makeup. It's really to feel confident and sexy, and there's no easier way to do that than to wear a bold lip.

So there ya have it! Are you ready to finally give the bold lip a try?!
