Laser Hair Removal: A Love Story

Hello! Today, I’m posting to you from South Haven, Michigan, where I am on mini holiday. Lake Michigan is still freezing but the weather has been nice enough to spend the afternoons lounging on the beach watching my kid play in the sand. It’s been a seemingly endless winter here in the Midwest. It’s the middle of June and we’ve only had a handful of days that have been warm and sunny. As a result, I’m not exactly bikini ready. I’ve been on a comfort food bender and my skin is more than a bit ghostly.

Thankfully, there is one thing that I don’t have to be self-conscious about summer. That “one thing” is unwanted hair.

As an Asian woman, I’ve been naturally spared of excessive hair on my arms and legs. However, my bikini line and armpits were always a different story. My hair there is naturally black and coarse which is far from the ideal situation. Every time I shaved, you could still see the hair follicles. I used to say it look like someone sprinkled black pepper on me. In my humble opinion, armpits and bikini lines are not exactly the sexiest locations for a five o’clock shadows.

A few years ago, I saw a Groupon for laser hair removal at a Med Spa that uses a Cutera Cool Glide Laser. I looked them up on Yelp, got some opinions from my mother’s group, and went for it. It’s was significantly discounted I think I paid $150 for 6 sessions on any small area. I decided to treat my bikini line.

I’m not going to lie it hurts. Like someone is snapping a rubber band against your skin over and over. You can take ibruprofen before treatment if you are sensitive to pain. Usually I would just take a deep breath and remind myself that with every pulse of the laser, my ugly coarse hair was dying and that was enough to carry me through.

I have pale skin and dark hair, which is ideal for laser treatments and the results were phenomenal. I still grow hairs on my bikini line occasionally but they are sporatic and very fine.

Last year, the same spa offered a laser hair removal flash sale to their customers. I jumped on it and started treating my armpits. I still have one session left but the results have already been amazing. I no longer have to worry that my underarms are reminiscent of Don Draper’s face.

I’m so much less self-conscious in summer clothes and save so much time and hassle. I don’t have to worry about shaving or ingrown hairs. It’s honestly the best money I have ever spent on myself and 100% worth the discomfort.

I wanted to share my story because I know a lot of women are curious about laser hair removal. I had a great experience but you should talk with a dermatologist or licensed technician to find out if you’d be a good candidate.
