Margot Tenenbaum Hair and Makeup Tutorial

In Wes Anderson’s film The Royal Tenenbaums, Gwyneth Paltrow plays Margot Tenenbaum, an adopted literary genius who is in love with her brother, never smiles, smokes like a chimney, and has an overall lack of care for life. She is my favorite character Gwyneth Paltrow has ever played, and she’s one of the easiest last minute Halloween costume ideas you can whip up (especially if you’re blonde and/or have a bob). Flip through the photos below to see my Margot Tenenbaum hair and makeup tutorial.

My hair and makeup tutorial for a quick and easy Margot Tenenbaum Halloween costume.

  • Let’s Start with Makeup 2 of 14
    Makeup

Margot is a very sullen girl, and her makeup is as easy as last night's smudged black eyeliner.

What you'll need is your basic foundation and powder, black eyeliner (liquid and pencil), black eyeshadow, black mascara, and a light gloss or lipstick.

I began with my regular foundation and powder routine. Next, I lined my eyes, top and bottom lids, with gobs of black eyeliner. I began with liquid and then simply smudged my eyes with my fingers. Then I went back in with a black pencil to touch up and add more, and then smudged it with a blender.

Next I took my black eyeshadow and applied generous amounts to the top of my lids. I took it around the edges and along the bottom as well to really get a good raccoon eye.

If you already have straight blonde hair, this is an easy costume for you! If you have a straight blonde bob or shoulder length hair, it's even easier!

Begin with a side part (I actually did the opposite side of Margot's, but it's just a costume, so it doesn't really matter).

Brush out your hair and use a straightening iron if you have waves. I've included this photo to show what my hair looked like "before."

Create a low and loose ponytail and secure with a clear elastic band. If your hair is fine, create a low/loose braid or even two. This will give you more area to work with.

From the side, it will look like this. You will need bobby pins for the next step. You're basically creating a Faux Bob hair style.

Swoop your ponytail or braid under, lay it horizontally across the nape of your neck or bottom of your head, and bobby pin it down like there's no tomorrow.

Hair spray to hold ... and your final step is adding Margot's signature red barrette. I didn't have a red barrette, so I used a red Sharpie marker on this silver one to get the look.

Add your light gloss or lipstick to finalize your look.

Faux bob hairstyles are easier to conceal with curls, so it won't be perfect, but this is a Halloween costumes, so who needs perfection?
