Mixed Metals Ombre Nail Tutorial

Remember when it was taboo to wear gold and silver or any other combination of metals together? I’m so glad that ruling was overturned! Mixing metallic colors is one of my favorite trends in beauty and fashion. Another look I love is ombre nails. I’ve tried to create them the traditional way, using a sponge, and it was a hassle. A very, very messy hassle. I’ve developed my own technique that is MUCH easier and completely mess-free in this tutorial. Since I’m in a holiday/shimmery sort of mood, I’ve combined two metallic colors, but you can use this ombre technique with any shades you like. View the awesome mixed metals glitter nail tutorial with step-by-step instructions below.

  • Prep Your Nails 2 of 10

Start by shaping your nails, gently pushing back cuticles, and applying hand cream. If you want to see more on how to do a basic manicure, visit my post on naked nails.

  • Clean Nail Bed 3 of 10

Start by wiping away any oils from your nails using a cotton pad and nail polish remover or rubbing alcohol. This often overlooked step will extend the life of your manicure.

  • Base Coat 4 of 10

Apply a base coat. I prefer a ridge-filling formula to create an even surface.

  • Apply Your Base Color 5 of 10

Your base color should be very opaque. I used a shimmery carbon color that only required one coat.

  • Start Layering Your Second Color 6 of 10

Here's the trick: your second color needs to be sheer. On the first coat of your second color, start about ¾ of the way down your nail. Do not oversaturate your brush, as you want it to blend in with your first color. Do not apply the color in a straight line. Keeping it irregular makes the ombre effect look more natural.

  • Second Layer of Your Second Color 7 of 10

On the next pass, start applying the sheer color about halfway down your nail. Again, keep it a little irregular.

  • Third Layer of Your Second Color 8 of 10

The third layer should just cover your tips and you should now have a nice blended effect. How easy was that?

  • Glitter Coat 9 of 10

Now this is optional, but I added a coat of mixed metallic glitter polish.

  • Top Coat 10 of 10

Apply a top coat and you are done!
