Christian Dior wanted to make women “not only more beautiful, but happier,” and happy to flaunt their radiant beauty. Inspired by timeless archetypes of beauty and the couturier’s lush fabrics, Dior created his first makeup product in 1953, a revolutionary couture lipstick called Rouge Dior.
Historically, red was worn as a sign of social status and vitality, and understanding that a single touch of color can change one’s appearance, Dior created a revolution in red, a symbol for feminine empowerment and the art of seduction. Women could now choose lip colors to match their clothes, their moods, and their desire for expression.
