11 Drinks to Fight Your Cold

Last week our whole family had a terrible cold. My son was out of school and my husband and I tried to care for him while stumbling in a feverish haze doing our own jobs. Lucky for me I work from home and can show up to my little home office in my jammies with a hot cup of tea. My husband and I hardly ever go to the doctor when we get viruses like the one we got last week, unless of course on the rare occasion it turns into a sinus infection or pneumonia. Instead, I opt for home remedies like grandma’s favorite penicillin, homemade chicken noodle soup and healthy drinks to keep us hydrated.

I think the key to fighting a cold is to get as much rest as you can and a ton of fluids. Staying super hydrated helps keep your mucous thin and your nose de-congested too. I think it also wards off infection because the mucous is thin and moving, instead of thick and setting in your sinuses and chest. Okay enough talk about mucous, I know it’s gross.

I’ve got 10 healthy drinks to help keep you hydrated when trying to fight off a cold. Remember to stay away from dairy milk though when warding off a cold, milk makes mucous thick. However almond, soy or rice milk would be a good milk option. I’ve got lots of warm drinks here, plus several other healthy options courtesy of The Daily Meal.

Chicken Broth

This one has been a favorite for generations. Chicken broth is good on it's own or made into chicken noodle soup. Make sure to buy low sodium broth though.
