12 Grossest Foods You're Eating Right Now

Beetles in Juice

If you've poured yourself a cup of ruby red grapefruit juice or dug into a carton of strawberry yogurt lately, chances are you've consumed carmine, a bright red food dye made from the crushed abdomens of the Dactylopius Coccus beetle. The dye is used to make food, drinks, and even some cosmetics more visually appealing.

I really hate posts like these. It makes me feel like I can’t eat anything or feed my kids anything without making a bad choice.

  2. Reese says:

There are people who think a fast food shake is a healthy snack?!

  3. Hope says:

Is everything not good for you? Seem’s like that is what it is coming down to now days. You can’t eat anything because it is bad for you or unhealthy or full of crap.

  4. Janet says:

I usually take articles like these with a grain of salt. There is definitely an EWW factor so some of these and of course eating carcinogens is never a good thing, but with the ones on bugs – what is wrong with the bugs? Do they cause cancer too? Or are those purely for the EWW factor? There are countries in the world that actually consume bugs without thinking it’s yucky. So are the examples here dangerous for consumption? That would be a nice tidbit to add. And, no, I don’t really want to eat bugs, but it would be nice to know if you’re mentioning them as a danger to consumers or just as a YUCK!

  5. Heidi says:

I would rather have a natural source like bugs than a chemical. I have seen the red dye affect kids, but have only ever seen it “working” with it was fresh in their systems, but in the long term. The kids always went back to normal after a little while, while my kids who do have ADHD seem unfazed by it.

  6. S says:

Actually, I don’t eat a single one of those 12 things. No artificial food colors or dyes in my house, and we buy organic. There is also no High Fructose Corn Syrup in my house. When we started removing the harmful substances from the food we were consuming we lost weight, gained more energy, got better hair and skin, and even stopped having allergies. Choosing to eat processed foods is choosing to let your food kill you.

If you think you can’t afford to buy organic, think again. You are just reinvesting your money in doctor’s bills instead of a quality diet. It’s late Spring right now, which is the perfect time to plant a garden. You can get a two for one…exercise and sunshine with virtually free healthy produce if you plant it yourself.

  7. Melody says:

I think it’s great for articles to come out about this – it’s impossible to make good choices when we don’t have the information!

  8. Jessica says: have the right idea. I applaud the good choices you have made for your family. BUT I have news for you all. We are all going to die….
