21 Pounds in 21 Days: How to Get the Martha's Vineyard Detox Diet Results at Home

When morning show host Steve Harvey announced his plans to lose 21 Pounds in 21 Days by following The Martha’s Vineyard diet detox, he sparked a nationwide interest in this juice-fast diet program. The Martha’s Vineyard Diet has recieved much acclaim for it’s abilty to help participants drop pounds quickly. However, it’s also recieved a lot of criticism, too, for it’s strict regime and short-term fix to poor eating habits. On this diet, participants agree to consumer juice only for a period of 21 days. No eating or chewing food for the entire time period. “You can’t live on a diet like this because it simply does not have adequate calories or protein,” said Anne Fletcher, MS, RD, according to NYDailyNews.com.

The diet brings to mind other dramatic weight loss fads, including the Master Cleanse lemonade diet, once followed by Beyonce, which consists of a 10-day lemonade, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper concoction throughout the day. While most dieticians and nutritionists agree that the best and healthiest way to lose weight is to “eat less, move more,” many participants of these dramatic weight loss programs are full believers in the boot camp regime. Maurice M, a graduate of the Martha’s Vineyard diet writes, “I started the program two months ago and since then I have lost 45 pounds. The program really gave me a jump start to wanting to eat and maintain a healthy life style.”

If you feel a juice fast detox is right for you, here are a few tips for safe and healthy juice fasting.  Before beginning a juice fast program, you should always consult with a doctor.  The tips below are guidelines that have worked for other juice fasting participants, they are not guaranteed to make you lose weight, and are not a safe substitute for long term healthy eating practices.  Keep in mind that juice fasting is considered an extreme form of dieting and detoxing because they require the intake of liquids only, no solid foods are consumed with a juice detox.

Juice Fasting Guidelines & Tips

  • Be Healthy. If you are pregnant, nursing, taking prescription drugs, diabetic, or underweight, you should not start a juice fast.  If you have any abnormal health concerns or issues, consult with a medical doctor before beginning a juice fasting program.
  • Fast in Warm Months. While juice fasting, yor body will need all the support it can get.  Winter weather, or other harsh environmental conditions can put stress on the body while it works its way through a detox.  Many proponents of juice fasting suggest fasting during the warmer months of the year, with Spring being the best and safest times to begin a fast.
  • Kickstart the Program. It’s or more days before the fast, alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, sugar, dairy, wheat, animal meat, fish, and eggs are typically reduced or eliminated from the diet. This preparation diet often consists mainly of organic fruits, vegetables, and beans.
  • Consume A Proper Amount of Juice Daily. Give your body the energy it needs to make it through the day.  While juice fasting is often considered an ideal form of detox, because the body is still recieving vital nutrients and carbs, it will still tire or be harmed if not given an appropriate amount.  Many juice fasting programs recommend participants drink 32-64 ounces of juice is usually recommended per day during the fast. Juice should be sipped throughout the day.
  • Focus on Fresh, High Quality Juices. Juice fasting doesn’t have to be boring.  A variety of fresh fruits and vegetables should be utilized in a juice fast: celery, carrot, kale, cabbage, apple, cranberry, spinach, beet, and other greens are the primary focus of most juice diets.  Avoid citrus fruits, as they can be hard on the stomach during a food fast.  Organic fruits and vegetables are imperative to a truly safe and effective juice fast. If you do not have access to organic produce, many nutritonal practitioners suggest thoroughly washing all fruits and vegetables in a non-toxic produce cleaner, or peeling their skins off before juicing.
  • Drink Water. Juice fasting does not elimimate the body’s need for water.  Drink 6-8 glasses of warm, or room temperature filtered water to ensure proper hydration.
