My kids are on the countdown to summer, and I’m counting down to the Summer Movie Season. I know it’s all usually fluff and special effects, but there’s something exciting about escaping the heat of a summer day, settling into a cool theatre, and kicking back with a tub of popcorn. Whether you go to the movies next month, or next week, you can enjoy your visit to the theatre even more when it’s simply a pleasure, rather than a guilty pleasure.  With a snack bar full of indulgent, high-fat, high-calorie options, here are 6 simple choices that will help you navigate through the naughtiest snacks, and end up with a nosh that doesn’t break your goal to eat right and treat yourself with healthy choices. Here are  6 smarter snacks to choose next time you’re at the movie theater!

  • Go Small 1 of 6
    Go Small
If you can't make it through a movie without popcorn, spring for the Kid-Sized Popcorn Meals , and order a diet drink. You won't be getting many nutrients, and you'll still be consuming artificial sweeteners, but at least you'll limit your intake to a significantly smaller amount of snack than you would with a tub of popcorn, and giant guzzler of a drink.
  • Get Your Chocolate On 2 of 6
    Get Your Chocolate On
SnoCaps may not seem like the most exciting movie time treat, but they deliver a good dose of chocolate for a relatively small number of calories. A 3.1 ounce box of SnoCaps weighs in at 200 calories, versus nearly 500 calories for a similarly-sized box of Goobers.
  • Hot Dog! 3 of 6
    Hot Dog!
Next time you crave a movie theatre meal, skip the nachos, which can cost you as many as 1,100 calories, and go for a single hot dog instead. With a bit of mustard on the side, you'll likely consume less than 350 calories, saving you nearly 700 on calories and even more on fat!
  • Sweet Sensations 4 of 6
    Sweet Sensations
Believe it or not, a 3 ounce box of Mike and Ike's will satisfy your sweet-and-chewy cravings for just around 320 calories, and a similar amount of Skittle will rack up about 350 calories. Just make sure to check your candy package for the serving amounts in each box!
  • Do the Twist 5 of 6
    Do the Twist
Share a 6 ounce bag of Twizzlers next time you're at the movie and you'll get a decent amount of candy while only consuming about 285 calories. Not a bad deal for a 2-hour flick that may otherwise cost you a whole days worth of indulgent noshing.
  • Classic Candy 6 of 6
    Classic Candy
If you feel like a handful of candy that will melt in your mouth, not in your hand, you may spring for the plain M&M's to cut back on calories. Surely, there are more calories in a 5.3 ounce bag of peanut M&M's, right? Right, indeed. However, the difference is so slim (half a bag of plain M&M's weighs in at 375 calories, versus 395 calories for a bag of peanut M&M's), you might as well spring for the Peanut M&M's, split a bag with a friend, and revel in those few extra bits of protein you'll be getting from the peanuts.
