6 Fruits and Vegetables Most Likely To Cause Kitchen Injuries

The Huffington Post recently reported on a UK study which revealed the world’s most dangerous vegetables. These are the vegetables most likely to cause kitchen injuries. Of the 88 percent of people who injure themselves in the kitchen, 39 percent do it on vegetables that are difficult to cut. Have you ever cut yourself when a knife slips against a vegetable you can’t quite get your knife to pass through cleanly? It is scary and happens more easily than you think. To prevent kitchen injuries like this, the first step is to keep your knives sharp and always cut on a stable surface like a countertop or cutting board. Then, take your time and care in cutting your vegetable. I’ve even hurt myself on several fruits. Sometimes carving a fruit is harder than a tough vegetable. Here are some fruits and vegetables you should take care when handling because, as I’ve learned from experience, kitchen injuries are no fun!

    Rutabaga is a tough round vegetable that needs to be peeled before it is sliced. It's round shape, it is usually the size of a softball, makes is particularly challenging to peel. Try cutting off a thin piece at the bottom and placing it on a flat surface before peeling and slicing.

    I've always found cantaloupe tough to cut because of the thick rind. To cut it open I use a sharp serrated knife. I once used a chef's knife that was dull and cut my palm. Ouch!

    Watermelons can be unwieldy and tough to carve. When making a detailed carving such as this one I recommend using a special watermelon carving knife or a sharp knife with a serrated blade. This will reduce chances of slippage off the rind and onto your hand.

    This tough vegetable is notoriously hard to carve. It is best cut with a specialty serrated knife. Be sure to cut it on a stable surface to avoid risk of injury. Scoop out the inner flesh and seeds with a sharp-toothed spoon.
