Ant Hill Ice Cream Cones

Ant Hill Ice Cream Cones

I am all about encouraging my daughter’s love of nature, but when she came home the other day from nature camp talking enthusiastically about ants I wasn’t sure what to say. Ants? Really? It does make sense though. They had learned all about worker ants and how they build tunnels underground and take care of each other. I can see how she found it fascinating and I might even consider getting her an ant farm for her birthday if she is still curious about this in a few months. In the mean time, I decided to have some fun with her new found fascination and make ant hill ice cream cones. We covered chocolate ice cream in graham cracker crumbs to look like dirt and chopped up licorice into tiny pieces to resemble ants. I even dipped them in a touch of honey to make it look like they were climbing up the side of the cone. It gave me the creeps, but she loved it! I do have to say, one of the best parts about having children is how they remind you to appreciate nature again.

Chocolate Ice Cream

Ice Cream Cones

1 cup crushed graham crackers

Black licorice

1. Scoop an ice cream cone full of chocolate ice cream and roll the top in the cracker crumbs. Use a thin knife or straw to push down the center of the ice cream to create a little well.

2. Chop up the black licorice and arrange them on the cone, creeping up the side and onto the top. A dab of honey will help them stick if you need them too. Enjoy!

This nature-inspired treats are almost too pretty to eat!
