Back to School: Healthier Vending Machines

By Jennifer Savor the Thyme |

While many of us are finally adjusting to the Back to School schedules and either packing or paying for lunches, I am reminded of vending machines that exist in many schools.

Although many schools have either banned them or taken out anything labelled candy, many still contain what I call ‘junk’.

Luckily, there is a company that appears to be addressing this….

The All Brands Vending Company, located in Iowa, has introduced Healthy Vending Options in Schools. These machines vend alternatives to traditional options, as the snacks and beverages in these vending machines are low fat, low sugar and low in carbohydrates. In addition, they are free of synthetic ingredients, trans fats, and artificial colors and flavors.

Now, I must admit, I am always a bit critical of what companies call healthy and until I see a list of what is included, I will remain optimistic that this is a step in the right direction. Maybe we can hope for a machine that vends organics fruits and vegetables?

Do your schools still have traditional vending machine options? If they have ‘Healthy Choices’, please share what they are.

I believe this are a healthier option – but even with those criteria – you can get some pretty crappy stuff – see http://www.snack-girl.com/snack/vending-machine-healthy-snacks/
