A New Cookbook Sweet Enough to EatJaime
This is the cookbook of my childhood fantasies. When I was a young girl, we had two cookbooks: one that was well-loved and used all the time, with a binding reinforced with duct tape, and another that was equally well-loved, but just not as often. The first was practical, the second not as much. But the great thing about the second cookbook was the ever-so-small skinny section of pages with color pictures.
On Sunday afternoons, when everyone was napping and I was bored, I would look at those pictures over and over again. I still remember my favorite photograph, which was of a cake, covered in white frosting and adorned with candied violets.
You can imagine my delight when I saw the cover of the new cookbook by Fiona Cairns called Bake & Decorate: Charming Cakes, Cupcakes, and Cookies for Every Occasion. As you can see, the cover has a cake dripping in lavender icing and topped with sugared violets. Though it is reminiscent of that cherished cookbook of my mother’s, it far surpasses it with a color photograph of some gorgeous cake or another on every other page.
Some of the recipes include an Easter Chocolate Truffle Cake, a Summer Berry Rose-Scented Meringue, and a Strawberry, Mint, and Balsamic Cheesecake.
I hope my children will have as much joy perusing its pages as I do.
