Everyone’s favorite chef and Food Network personality Ina Garten, otherwise known as the Barefoot Contessa, came under fire this weekend for allegedly turning down a little boy’s Make-A-Wish Foundation request to cook with her. 6 year-old Enzo became a fan of the Barefoot Contessa while watching her show with his mother during his hospital stays. Last year, through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, he requested a chance to cook with her, but was turned down due to a book tour. The patient little boy waited a year and made the request again, only to be turned down definitively by Ina Garten’s staff. His family mentioned this on their blog, and after being picked up by TMZ, a firestorm ensued.
In a bit of good news today, cooler heads have prevailed. Apparently Ina Garten’s staff had not consulted her before turning down the request and she was unaware of the wish. Once it came to her attention she planned to personally call young Enzo, who suffers from Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, to invite him to cook with her.
It’s worth noting that in her position, she does receive hundreds of requests like this and is known for her many charitable contributions. Even so, it’s great news that the little boy will get his wish, and that one of my favorite cooks came through. Let’s all keep Enzo in our thoughts as he fights to recover from his serious illness.
