Be Your Own Barista: Caramel MacchiatoOle & Shaina Olmanson
This isn’t a traditional caramel macchiato, but it’s still a tasty drink that you can enjoy in your own home even if you don’t have an espresso machine. It’s easy to toss together with everyday ingredients, and soon you’ll be satisfying your craving for the coffee shop without spending the $5 in your back pocket.
Recently on a trip to Smucker’s headquarters in Orrville, Ohio, I had the pleasure of trying out a few of their test kitchen recipes. This was one of them, adapted to suit my personal preference a bit.
Easy Caramel Macchiato
1/2 cup whole milk
1-2 tablespoons vanilla syrup
1/2 cup hot, fresh strong brewed coffee (Like Folgers French Roast or Black Silk)
Caramel Ice Cream Topping (like Smucker’s Sundae Syrup), to garnish
Pour milk into a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for 1 to 1 1/2 minutes until hot but not boiling. Beat the milk with electric beaters until the milk is thick and the foam doubles on top. The foamed milk will separate from the steamed milk, which will settle on the bottom.
In a cup, combine coffee and vanilla syrup. Add 1/4 cup steamed milk and spoon foamed milk to the brim of the cup. Drizzle with caramel syrup and serve.
