And no, I’m not talking about The Breakfast Club with Molly Ringwald and 1980’s haircuts. This Breakfast Club is all about fruit salads, steamy oatmeal, almond butter toast, hot coffee, foamy chai tea and more…
I admit that I used to be a habitual breakfast skipper. I guess you could call me a serial cereal-skipper. I’d wake up feeling ‘not so hungry’ and figure why in the world would I eat when I’m not even hungry?.. Well if you’re a habitual breakfast skipper too you probably know this drill. Here’s how mine went:
* Around 10:30am hunger finally kicked in and I’d grab a Venti soy latte or chai and maybe a quick fruit salad, whole grain bagel or protein bar.
* Around 1pm I’d be starving for a substantial lunch, but like most people’s busy schedule a “quick lunch” had to do.
* By the time evening rolled around I really hadn’t eaten much “real food” “whole food” all day. So my giant (yet healthy) dinner would turn into my biggest meal of the day – and I’d have to make up for all the skipped calories during the day.
..this cycle is not fun. So eventually I joined the Breakfast Club! You can too. Admission is free. No secret handshake required. Here’s why breakfast is truly the most important meal of the day…
Reasons to Join the “Breakfast Club”
side note: last spring I attended the Dole Health and Wellness Blogger Summit - and one of the most important lectures at the event was all about the importance of breakfast. Many of these quips are pulled from what I learned from the Dole breakfast nutrition demo.
1) High Fiber!
Many healthy breakfast foods are high in fiber and will satisfy your hungry tummy well into the lunchtime hour. Foods like whole grains, fruit and even veggies. Sometimes I adore veggies for breakfast!
2) Eat More Fruit.
Fruit is so easy to pair with a healthy breakfast. Try a giant mixed fruit salad filled with seasonal delights. Fruit is fiber, potassium and antioxidant rich. The most antioxidant-dense fruits are usually berries like blueberries and blackberries. You are much less likely to add fruit to your lunch and dinner. So in the morning: fill up on fruit!
3) Metabolism Kickstart!
Breakfast perks up your metabolic rate and establishes your “point of satiation for the day”.
4) Eat Less Everyday!
Studies show that people who eat breakfast eat 25% less calories during the rest of the day than those who skip breakfast (this statistic from the Dole Summit lecture). Choose filling, hydrating options like oatmeal, smoothies and more.
5) Be Smart.
Breakfast has been shown to help improve cognitive ability – which is important for kids and school. Make sure your kids are a member of the Breakfast Club!
