My husband and I watched It’s Complicated the other night and when the pain au chocolate making scene came on we began to drool. We looked at each other and decided this was something we must make. I did some research and discovered making pain au chocolate from scratch is quite an undertaking. Most recipe’s I found had a 6 hour prep/cooking time. Ha, yea right, 6 hours! That’s just not possible in our busy house with 2 little kids. Instead we decided to try the cheater version using puff pastry. I know, I know it’s not the same, but SIX hours for the real deal?! Now that we were set on the cheater method, what type of chocolate should we use? This is where the kids got very involved with input. Ideas were getting wild and before I knew it the candy section of the store was on my counter. Which one did we like? The least expected and one I almost didn’t make. Find out the surprise winner of our taste test after the jump…
Here are the varieties of chocolate we used:
Trader Joe’s dark chocolate bar
Trader Joe’s truffles (recommended to bake with)
Semi Sweet chocolate chips
White chocolate chips
Goobers (yes they still make these)
Dark chocolate with marshmallow
Sharffen Berger dark chocolate with roasted cocoa nibs
Sharffen Berger bittersweet 70% cacao
This list is embarrassing.
And the winner is…White chocolate chips!!! Followed by the Trader Joe’s dark chocolate bar and the regular semi sweet chocolate chips were pretty good too. The ones with marshmallows were fun. They were all good, but there was something extra sweet about the white chocolate chips that surprised us all.
Cheater Pain Au Chocolate Recipe

Preheat oven to 400 Degrees F. Cut the puff pastry into 6 pieces. Place small amount of chocolate on one end (1 tablespoon). Gently roll the pastry up started with the chocolate end, not too tight and place seam side down. Brush with egg mixture and bake for 8-10 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool for 10 minutes.
