In warmer weather, I’m happy with cereal. But when the winter chill sets in, I need a big bowl of warm comfort to start my day. Plain old oatmeal is great, but with a few quick steps, you can dress it up and make it something special. Tart Montgomery dried cherries and a hint of orange zest bring tangy notes to everyday oatmeal. I also add a little milk and honey for perfect, creamy sweetness.
Oatmeal with Dried Cherries and Oranges
1 cup plus 2 tablespoons old fashioned oats
1 1/2 cups water
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup dried cherries
1 teaspoon orange zest
1/3 cup milk
1/4 cup honey
orange slices for garnish
Bring water and salt to a boil in a medium saucepan. Add the oats, boil briefly, then reduce to a simmer. Simmer for five minutes, stirring occasionally. After 2 minutes, add the dried cherries.
Once the oats are cooked through, add the orange zest, milk, and honey.
Serve with oranges slices.
