I’m sure you have heard the buzz about including plenty of fish oil in your diet because it is helpful for a variety of health needs including brain health. Fish oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids including DHA and EPA. What are those exactly? Well the full (too long to pronounce) names are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). But no matter how you say it, getting kids (and some adults!) to enjoy fish or even take a fishy-tasting supplement can be tricky. Well with one secret ingredient that has wellness folks buzzing, you can get DHA without the fish. How about a Chocolate Banana Brain Boost Shake sound? This shake is fish-free, vegetarian and rich in omega-3 DHA. Give this easy shake recipe a whirl and check out the secret veggie-DHA-rich ingredient..
The secret ingredient: algal oil. Algal oil is sourced directly from the algae that fish eat! So you are kind of cutting out the middle man (or middle fish) and getting right to the good stuff. Algal oil is rich in DHA, in a plant-based form. Suitable for vegans, kids and fish-fearing folks.
But one important question: is DHA from algae as effective in boosting health as DHA from fish oil? So far, the studies look very promising. However, there is much more literature on fish oil than algal oil, so more studies are greatly needed to confirm. More on this question from FoodProcessing.com.
So how can you easily get your kids to consume algal oil? Seek out soy milk that is fortified with algal oil. Silk Soymilk has a DHA-Brain Boost variety that contains algal oil. There are a few other brands as well. You could also buy various protein and nutrition powders that contain algal oil and blend them into a delicious smoothie. ChoosingRaw.com reviews “True Vitality” – one possible algal oil-fortified shake mix. So the rest is easy – just add yummy smoothie ingredients and blend. Chocolate Banana Brain Smoothie coming up!
