Back when we used to be the kind of people who could go out to brunch regularly (that is to say, childless people), one of our favorite places had a chocolate sandwich on the menu. I would never order it because when I pay for a meal, I like it to be something that either requires too much skill or too much hassle to do at home. But it did always sound really good to me and I meant to make my own. This weekend we finally got around to it and it was incredible.
There’s really not much to it. Take a croissant, cut it in half, toast it, and put some chocolate on it. The end result is essentially like a pain au chocolat, but with the advantage that you can choose what kind of chocolate you use, so you can use the really good stuff. We happen to live in a neighborhood with one on the best chocolate makers in America, Mast Brothers. But any kind of high quality chocolate will help take this simple dish to the next level.
