Fall has arrived here on The Family Kitchen. Yesterday Brooke posted an amazing recipe for candied apple cider, and today I’m offering my take on mulled apple cider.
Classic mulled apple cider is a healthy, warming beverage that fills the house with the scent of cinnamon, clove and orange. An ideal drink for a party, or for chilled trick-or-treaters. Easy and delicious, mulled cider adds a festive note to any gathering. For a splurge, serve with a grind (or stick) of fresh cinnamon, and a twist of orange zest. And for adults, you can always add a splash of your favorite rye whiskey once the kids are in bed.
Classic Mulled Apple Cider
1 gallon apple cider
2 large oranges
20 whole cloves
2 cinnamon sticks
8 allspice berries
2″ segment of fresh ginger, peeled and sliced
Push the whole cloves in to the orange all over. Place the orange at the bottom of a large kettle and pour the cider over it. Add the rest of the spices and the ginger. Cook over medium heat until the cider is quite steamy but not boiling, and then turn the heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes or indefinitely. Peel off 1″ strips of zest from the second orange for a garnish. Serve the cider in mugs with a cinnamon stick and a twist of orange zest.
