COOL WHIP Chocolate Zoo

By Brooke McLay |

Most moms say “don’t play with your food,” but I think the kitchen is exactly the place to embrace play. It’s like a laboratory, where liquids, solids, heat, and cold come together and make magic. To welcome my kids into the experience of creating in the kitchen, I pulled together a few simple ingredients to make these super fun, super simple, wildly delicious Chocolate Zoo plates.

It’s easy to get your kids creating their own chocolate zoos! A simple chocolate mousse made with chocolate chips and COOL WHIP Whipped Topping create a pliable base, fresh fruits lend a bit of color to your jungle, and cookie straws and mint leaves make for tropical trees. Or, perhaps we should say tropiCOOL. Because these fun little Chocolate Zoo plates aren’t just cool. They are COOL WHIP.

What you add makes it. #coolwhipmoms

COOL WHIP Chocolate Zoo Plates

  • 1 (8 ounce) tub COOL WHIP Whipped Topping
  • 1/2 cup milk semi-sweet chocolate chips, melted
  • 1 banana, sliced
  • 1 pint fresh raspberries
  • 2 tablespoons mini chocolate chips
  • 1 cup chocolate animal crackers
  • 10-12 cookie straws
  • 1 package fresh mint leaves

In a large bowl, whisk together the COOL WHIP and melted chocolate chips. Spread onto two small plates. Decorate the plate with remaining ingredients, pressing the animal crackers and cookie straws into the “mousse” to make them stand upright, and using a dollop of the “mousse” on top of the cookie straws to secure the mint leaves in place on top of the cookie straws to create “palm trees.”

This is SO cute! When I saw it a few weeks ago, I had to let my girls try it! It’s the perfect way to let them play with their food without getting in trouble and a great snack! The palm tree cookie straws are the best! And mint to top it off? This is just genius. So smart and super clever! Thanks Brooke, once again — LOVE your ideas! This would even be great for kids to do in school – as a special activity. Just can’t get enough!
