It’s long been thought that black pepper could help us lose excess fat, however no one actually knew how or why. Well, a new study published in the published in ACS’ Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry finally can give finally give us some answers on how black pepper can keep us slim.
The study pinpoints piperine, “the pungent-tasting substance that gives black pepper its characteristic taste, [and concluded] that piperine also can block the formation of new fat cells.” Pevious studies had shown that piperine can reduce fat in the bloodstream and that it had other health benefits; however, no one had studied how piperine works on the molecular level.
Laboratory and computer models showed that piperine “interferes with the activity of genes that control the formation of new fat cells.” This process may even set off another metabolic chain reaction that helps keep fat in check. Hopefully more studies will soon be carried out to see if piperine could be useful in the treatment of obesity or any related diseases.
