A few years ago my friend Barbara and I were exchanging bedtime snack secrets and she shared her favorite: dark chocolate and ice water. I was intrigued and gave it a try myself. No surprise here, I loved it. Now, nearly every night after my daughter has long been asleep and my husband is upstairs I end my day with a square of dark chocolate (the darker the better) and a glass of cold ice water. I don’t know how to describe it, the water and the chocolate are both so bracing and calming all at once.
I also think since the water is so cold I am inclined not to eat as much chocolate. I just like once simple square, no more, certainly no less. After the last nibble has been savored and the water glass emptied, it is off upstairs to bed for a good night’s sleep. For the record, I’ve tried this routine with milk chocolate and chocolate candies and I really don’t find it nearly as satisfying as the dark chocolate. The ice water/dark chocolate match is the key.
