The most romantic meal I’ve ever had was not about the food at all. I had been dating this guy for a little while. He was a musician and traveled everywhere, so I didn’t see him much. One day he called and asked if I could meet him at his family’s ranch not too far from where I lived. When I got there, he surprised me with a home-cooked meal of grilled Mahi Mahi, asparagus, and rice. I was shocked that he could cook something other than the cheese crackers and Girl Scout cookies that were always in his travel bus. To be honest, I had a hard time eating it, but it was the fact that he took the extra step to impress me that made it unforgettable. The sunset deck serenade overlooking the hills didn’t hurt either. Seven years later, and he still serenades our daughter and I, although I do most of the cooking. Our favorite date night dinner after we put her to sleep is this rustic seafood stew.
