OK, it has been for awhile. But when I was a kid, the “special sauce” on a Big Mac was a mysterious secret – everyone knew the 1974 jingle, “Two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions — on a sesame seed bun.” I myself was rarely allowed to go to McDonald’s, and when we did, a Big Mac wasn’t an option. But I dreamed of that special sauce, and Thousand Island dressing was often used as a sub-par substitution on homemade burgers around our neighborhood.
Although over the years there have been many copycat recipes, last month McDonald’s released a video starring executive Chef Dan Coudreaut (executive Chef of McDonald’s – who knew that was a thing?), who walks us through the process of making actual Big Mac sauce from scratch. So here it is, just in time for summer barbecue season – thanks to Melissa and Buzz for tipping me off!
