Easy Dairy-Free Vegan Chocolate Sauce


There are few things that can’t be made better with a drizzle of chocolate sauce. As Valentine’s Day draws near, so do all things chocolate – the sweet of choice for this holiday above all others. If you’re looking for a dairy-free or vegan option, this simple chocolate sauce is divine. Easy to stir together, it makes a great gift for those you love, packaged in a small jar and delivered with a kiss. (Or not!)

The addition of chopped chocolate (or chocolate chips) makes a more luxurious mouthfeel, but is totally optional if you want to leave it out. If you like, swap the vanilla for peppermint extract for chocolate-mint sauce.

Simple Chocolate Sauce

3/4 cup cocoa powder
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 1/2 cups water
1/3 cup chopped dark chocolate (optional)
1 tsp. vanilla or instant espresso powder

In a medium saucepan set over medium heat, whisk together the cocoa and sugar, getting rid of any lumps of cocoa. Whisk in the water and bring to a boil; reduce the heat and simmer for a minute or two. Remove from heat and stir in the chocolate, if you’re using it, and the vanilla or espresso. Let cool slightly and serve warm, or cool completely and refrigerate in small jars.

Makes about 2 1/2 cups.
