Firecracker Cupcakes for the Fourth of July!

Surely fireworks are the most exciting part of the 4th of July. Watching them, I am transported back to my childhood, and love the mix of awe and fear they inspire. We are lucky enough to live in New York, where the fireworks are particularly spectacular. And what better way to commemorate the highlight of the 4th of July evening than with your very own firecracker cupcakes?

These little treats are great to decorate with kids, and a fun way to mark the holiday.

Firecracker Cupcakes (adapted from Kitchen Daily)

1 recipe cupcakes (if you’d like a homemade option, I am partial to this classic yellow cake recipe, or this 1-2-3-4 cake recipe)

1 recipe frosting (try a traditional buttercream recipe here, or lightly sweet cream cheese frosting here)

for the decoration
Twizzlers
Swedish fish
baby blue Tic Tacs
blue and red jimmy’s
chocolate nonpareils
red and blue sprinkles
red and white starlight mints

Completely cool your cupcakes and apply a generous layer of frosting. Cut the Twizzlers into segments of varying length, and set all of your candy out. Decorate away!
