According to a recent Harvard University study that analyzed the diets of 120,000 Americans, the potato just may be the culprit behind those extra calories that lead to added pounds each year. French fries, potato chips, mashed potatoes or baked potatoes with all the toppings are not just treasured treats but staples of the American diet. Potatoes have a lot of starch and a lot of calories. Perhaps the potato is getting a bit of a bad wrap as it’s most likely the preparation and serving size that is to blame. Potatoes, after all are a great source of many essential vitamins. But it may be wiser to look for alternatives to the potato to help keep your waist line in check.
