Food for Thought: Head Out to the FarmElizabeth Stark
Growing up in the big city presents a lot of advantages for our daughters — a host of phenomenal cultural institutions at their doorstep, a range of cultures and experiences all around them, and, of course, great food delivered right to our house. But life in the city, or even the suburbs, can mean kids are removed from rural life and may not easily realize that the foods they eat come from a farm. That’s why every spring and fall, we head out of the city to visit some of our local farms. From sheep shearing, to egg collecting, to kale picking, our daughters get hands-on experience with food being grown and raised on a farm.
Farm visits are a great way to connect kids with the foods they eat and encourage them to try more wholesome alternatives. Kids are a lot more likely to try foods if they feel connected to it, and picking your own is a great way to accomplish that. Here in New York, we’re on the verge of strawberry picking season, and I can’t wait to get out with my kids and show them where their food comes from.
If you’re interested in checking out some of your own local farms, look for spring events like sheep shearing, or go for the tasty stuff and pick your own berries or vegetables.
