Forbidden Red Velvet for Valentine's Day

I have yet to experience a more seductive cake than the Red Velvet. The Southern Belle of desserts is a head-turner: Striking red, super moist and steeped in mystery. If there is a more perfect cake for Valentine’s Day, I don’t what it is. But there is some advice I must give you if you plan to make Red Velvet Cupcakes for your sweetie this Valentine’s Day…

Sure, there are other, more natural ways to achieve the scarlet red of Red Velvet. But none as effective or brilliant as good ol’ food coloring. And if I’m going for Red Velvet, I’m reaching for the forbidden bottle.

But there is another drawback to the red food coloring beyond a touch of naughtiness; beyond the Red 40 and Sodium Benzoate. There’s a little something more you should know about red food coloring… especially if you’re one of us. You’ll know who you are.
