Sometimes you crave chocolate. If you’re like me, you crave chocolate all the time. If you’re also like me, nibbling on a chalky candy bar doesn’t always satisfy the sort of chocolate cravings I get. No, I’m a foodie. So, when I want to satisfy my chocolate cravings, I want to do it in a way that rises snacktime to the sublime. This take on the classic comfort food–grilled cheese–is reminiscent of Pain au Chocolat, a French chocolate-filled croissant. Of course, seeing as how finding a batch of flaky croissants is nearly impossible in Colorado, I turned to a slightly more Americanized version of the recipe, Grilled Chocolate. Chocolate grilled and melted between two pieces of buttered bread, or even better–between two pieces of buttered poundcake.
2 slices white bread or pound cake
3 (6.8 oz.) chocolate bars
1 tablespoon butter
whipping cream or ice cream
Heat a frying pan or griddle to medium heat. Butter one side of each piece of bread or pound cake. Space three chocolate rectangles along the unbuttered side. Top with the remaining bread or cake, buttered-side up. Transfer to a hot griddle and cook till the cake is golden and the chocolate melted, about 2 minutes per side. Hint: Cook one sandwich first, to test the temperature/timing.
Serve as is or with a scoop of whipping cream or ice cream.
