With all the cookie decorating to do this season it’s important to have lots of pretty sprinkles on hand. We like to buy all kinds of sprinkles at the store, but we also like to make them ourselves. Why would we do that, you ask? Because doing it ourselves means we can make just about any color we want! My daughter and I love to set up shop at our kitchen counter and play alchemist, mixing sugars with gel paste to see just how pretty a purple we can make or how bright our orange can be. In a way it becomes part art lesson, part baking lesson. Then we line them up in little glass jars (I use recycled spice jars I’ve washed out) and we decorate all of our cookies for Christmas. Here is how you can make your sprinkles at home:
1 cup clear Sanding Sugar, divided up amongst little glass bottles (About 2 Tablespoons sugar per jar)
Assorted Food Coloring gels or Food Coloring drops
1. Put one or two drops of food color in each jar, seal them tightly with a lid and shake vigorously. Once the sugar is colored check for desired tint and add more drops of color is desired.
Note: When decorating the cookies some of the dye will rub off on your fingertips just like it does with store-bought sprinkles, do not be alarmed.
