(How to) Feed a Cold

Both my husband and 6 year old have been taken down by a brutal flu this week. As the only able-bodied one in the house, I’m naturally in charge of their care and feeding. And although they’re not up to eating much, something has to go down – and so I’ve been coming up with soothing, sippable soups, smoothies and such that are nutrient-dense and have properties that may combat – or at least ease the symptoms of – a bad cold. Common ingredients like garlic and chiles are believed to help clear nasal passages and relieve cold symptoms, and ginger has been used for centuries as a natural way to settle an upset stomach and ease nausea.

And just having someone cook for you has a way of making anyone feel taken care of; here are a few ideas if you’re looking for recipes that can be sipped, nibbled or slurped from bed, nourishing sick and worn-down bodies with vitamins and minerals, warmth and cool, whatever mom prescribes.
