Martin Luther King Jr. is remembered for his quotes, speeches, and actions. Though we may not all be powerful speakers, we can all carry on his legacy through volunteering on the The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Day of Service. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a day in which we commemorate Dr. King, his legacy, his sacrifice, and the lasting power of his actions and words to bring racial equality to the United States. His most famous quotes come from his “I have a dream speech,”–among the most memorable, and powerful, speeches in American history.

Less famously, Martin Luther King Jr. once commented that, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’” To commemorate Martin Luther King Jr.’s commitment to taking action to help all Americans, January 17, 2011 is the Martin Luther King National Day of Service, and you can help.  We can all further King’s legacy through volunteering in our own communities to help those in need. And from Meals on Wheels to your local soup kitchen or shelter, there are lots of ways for good home cooks to put their skills to use!

Looking for ways to get involved in your community? Check out the King National Day of Service site and search for volunteer opportunities in your neighborhood. Through the All for Good search engine you can enter key words to find things that most gel with your skills. For instance, I can easily search for food-related opportunities right here in Brooklyn. For other ways to get involved, check with your local community center or church. Through volunteering, we can all do our part to continue Dr. King’s legacy, and to ensure that all Americans really are free and equal.
