From the Mouths of Moms: What We Really Want for Mother's Day

Mother’s Day is right around the corner. Have you figured out what you’re giving to Mom yet? Look no further, we have the answer to your Mother’s Day gift idea woes from the mouths of moms themselves. I asked several food-oriented moms what they would want for the big day, and from home-cooked goodness to fun and useful kitchen tools, they’ve weighed in.

An avid baker, Jenny says, "A great kitchen gift for me would be fun cupcake liners, tags, baking bags and boxes." No time for it to get here? Pick up a gift card and let mom pick out her own baking treats.

Zoe, author of Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day, said, "My boys and hubby are making me blintzes! :) And my son wants me to show him how to make macarons! That is a gift; love him in the kitchen!"

You can never go wrong with a box of high quality chocolate, as many moms mentioned. The good stuff, boys. Don't bother with the Pot O' Gold. In fact, Kristen was happy to give her husband an out on his recent business trip and tell him exactly where to go to bring home the goods.

Maybe a bit of something for mom's belly is in order says Maria, " Homemade cookies and/or Silpat baking mats! Use them all of the time! I never have enough!" Plus, you can get her cookie cookbook in PDF, iPad, Kindle (only $0.99! through 5/25!!!) or as a hardcover on Blurb for plenty of recipe ideas.

Perhaps you want that one kitchen tool you just haven't had available before. For Cheryl, a food processor makes the list.

Aimee: " I've requested Honey Whole-Wheat Strawberry Shortcakes for Mother's Day, with extra whipped cream, please. I give my husband a head start by making the biscuits ahead of time and freezing them; all he has to do is whip the cream and make me a latte while the boys chop the strawberries. Breakfast doesn't have to be complicated, just served with lots of love - and in bed, of course."

Perhaps something that seems a bit frivolous but could actually be quite practical, as Amy said, " Oh! A bread machine! I've never had one, and I always wonder if it would be used or just stored away."

    Go Big or Go Home
Want to go big? What is the thing that Mom has been looking at forever? Let's make that dream happen. As Julie said, "Favourite food or kitchen gift... hmmm.. a new oven! Seriously, mine is old and electric and dying!" Treat mom to some luxury in the kitchen and take her shopping for that big-ticket item.

I think most moms share the sentiment with Sandy that "I don't require much when it comes to gifts. I'd rather have quality time with family." Still, if forced to choose, it's those things we use every day that seem to be important in the kitchen, "As simple as it sounds, a good can opener."

Of course, most moms also just want to spend more time with the kids and the husband. Robyn's dream gift would be, "A day full of just hanging out with my guys would be dreamy." If you really think about it, it's usually household obligations that seem to hinder that. So, how about a house cleaner to free mom up so she has time to just sit around and enjoy the family?

Has mom made a lifestyle or dietary change recently? Brooke, as a new vegan, thinks it would be just great to get a basket full of vegan goodies and advice to celebrate her new lifestyle change.
