Oh, I know. We’re modern women. We work. We weight lift. We don’t have time for the retro sundries of the 1950s housewife. And still…
Don’t you find yourself fighting against the ideal…just a leetle? Don’t you find yourself aching with the slightest bit of guilt when you can’t be there to walk your tots to and from school, or welcome them home in a Leave it to Beaver apron, eyes wide with anticipation over the stories of their day? I do. I sometimes pine for the simpler days. Wish I could be that TV mom I grew up with in my head. The one with high cheekbones and arms outstretched as she padded her way in mid-high heel about the house, vaccuming with an Electrolux, and tucking pin curls behind her ears.
My life as a mother is a far cry from such absurdities. But, the beginning of the school year makes me try a little harder to give my kids classic memories. It’s a good time to indulge in the comfort of traditions, too. Plus, don’t you just want ONE day of the year when you’re “that” mom?! The one waving neighborhood kids into the house, tucking them around homebaked cookies and giant glasses of milk, and talking about their days before shooing them off to finish homework?
Well, we may not be able to do it every day, but this year, we’re gonna do it for at least one of our days, dangit. I’ve gone through and pulled together 15 modern twists on the most classic recipe ever. 15 Chocolate Chip Cookies gone all 2013. A little bit crazy, a whole lotta gorgeous, just as good as the original. Sound like any mom you know? (Hint: that’s you, dollface.) Happy New Year of School!
