I have a love-hate relationship with Oriental Trading Company, the online party supply superstore. I love that it’s online, for one and that I can plan an entire birthday party from my computer during lunch hour at the office. And I love the value — I bought six little canvas sacks five years go for, like, free, that I still use today for the girls’ snack bags. But I hate how unreliable the place is. I’m sure in the same order as those snack bags I spent another $20 on absolute junk that looked incredibly adorable in the catalog. So I get a little too excited when I find a specific item that is cheap, made well, and (here’s the real bonus) special. Like their party cake treat boxes (pictured here). My daughter came home from her friend Louise’s birthday with one — it was filled with French candies (Louise’s grandmother, who lives in Belgium, sent them just for the occasion.) Each “cake” has eight slices, so it’s ideal for small parties. Total cost: $3.99. Will you please tell me what needles you’ve found in the megastore haystack?
