Play with Your Food #3: Cotton Candyland Cupcakes

Candyland Cupcakes

My daughter is such a fan of Candyland which is why we made her these cupcakes. I used lollipops to spell out Candyland and added gumdrops around them on the frosting. She got a huge kick out that since the gumdrop is, for some reason, her favorite spot on the whole board. I used the Cake Doctor’s recipe to jazz up some basic yellow cupcake mix with yogurt and a sweet cotton candy flavor. We couldn’t find actual cotton candy to garnish them, but that didn’t matter.  We served these up to an eager group of kids and pulled out the actual Candyland board to play while we ate. It was all so much fun!

Cotton Candyland Cupcakes

based on the Cake Doctor’s recipe

1 box (18.25 oz) Strawberry Cake Mix

12 oz. Strawberry Yogurt

1/4 cup water

1/4 cup vegetable oil

3 eggs

4 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature

3 cups confectioners’ sugar

3 tablespoons milk

Red food paste

Cotton Candy for Garnish (optional)

1. Preheat the oven to 350F. Line a 12 cup muffin tin and set aside.

2. Mix the cake mix, yogurt, oil, water and eggs together until completely smooth. Fill each muffin cup evenly and make for about 18 – 20 minutes, or until the tops spring bake lightly when touched. Allow to cool completely before frosting.

3. In another bowl mix the powdered sugar, milk and butter until smooth. Add a drop or two of red food paste to turn the frosting pink. Garnish with gumdrops, sprinkles and cotton candy – or any combination of the three. Enjoy!

Hello, thank you for the idea and recipe. I’m new to baking so I follow recipes exactly. Can you say how many eggs I should use? Thank you.
