While in Italian the word simply means “milk,” in the States, “latte” usually means a coffee drink consisting of espresso and steamed milk. That’s not the case everywhere though. In many countries latte can refer to a different drink altogether, like a cafe au lait. And even over here, the latte line is becoming blurred as many coffee shops offer iced lattes (which contain no steamed milk), soy lattes (which contain no milk at all), chai lattes (which contain no espresso), and iced soy chai lattes (which contain no espresso, no milk, and nothing steamed).
While it may chafe vocab nit-pickers, the ever expanding realm of the “latte” is a boon to the rest of us who are free to experiment and enjoy this morning or afternoon buzz in whatever way we enjoy most, whether it’s a homemade pumpkin spice latte or chai latte ice cream. One of the best products of all this experimentation has been the wide range of seasonal lattes on offer almost everywhere you look.
