Punxsutawney Phil: Is Diet the Secret to His Long Life?

Punxsutawney Phil, the most famous groundhog in America, if not the world, makes his appearance for Groundhog Day 2011 tomorrow. Although most groundhogs live to be only 10 years, Punxsutawney Phil’s handlers claim that there’s only been one Punxsutawney Phil in the more than 120 years Punxsutawney has been publicly celebrating Groundhog Day. Could diet be the secret to his longevity?

Groundhogs mostly eat grasses, greens, and people’s gardens. There’s no doubt a diet in green veggies is great for you. They also eat grasshoppers and other insects. That’s probably not going to find its way onto your plate anytime soon, but people around the world do eat insects and they are packed with lean protein.

Punxsutawney Phil’s handlers attribute his longevity to his drinking “the elixir of life.” Alas, they aren’t forthcoming with the recipe. But, if you want to try to emulate his diet, here are some great Family Kitchen veggie recipes:
