Skip the Canned Stuff: Homemade Orange Soda

Orange Soda

I don’t let my daughter drink soda, but I don’t blame her for wanting to try it. Everywhere we look soda is being advertised and people are drinking it! To try and appease her interest in it I made up this version of homemade orange soda. It is clear, not actually dyed orange like the ever popular canned variety, but it still tastes nice and orangy. Even this simple homemade treat is not something I plan to present to her on a regular basis, but at least it is better than the canned stuff!

Homemade Orange Soda

Juice and zest of 1 large orange

1/2 cup water

1/2 cup granulated sugar

2 cups sparkling water (not flavored)

1. Make the orange syrup by warm the orange juice and zest, water, and sugar in a small pan over medium heat. Allow the mixture to bubble slowly until it reduces by half and gets syrupy.

2. Allow the mixture to cool, strain the zest out with a wire strainer if desired, then stir it into the sparkling water and serve!
