Summer Sippers: Watermelon Caipirinha

Brazil’s national cocktail, the caipirinha, is becoming the new mojito on patios across North America. In this refreshing version, the distinct flavors of lime, ginger and mint (or try fresh tarragon) are beautifully complemented by the sweet taste of watermelon to create a delectable drink that is best served cold on a hot day!

To make a non-alcoholic version that resembles a Shirley Temple, replace the cachaça with ginger ale or another fizzy drink, and don’t bother shaking it. To fill a pitcher, increase quantities accordingly!

Watermelon Caipirinha

1 lime
5 quarter-sized slices ginger
2 tsp sugar
6 chopped mint leaves (or try fresh tarragon)
2 oz watermelon purée
2 oz cachaça (or vodka or rum)
1 oz grenadine

Muddle lime, ginger, sugar and mint and transfer to a martini shaker. Add watermelon purée, grenadine, cachaça and ice. Shake. Pour into a glass and serve.

Makes one cocktail.
