Before we had kids, our favorite bar to head to for a couple of drinks on a weeknight was Spuyten Duyvil, a Brooklyn beer bar with an incredible selection of beers from around the world and no sign out front (unless you looked very carefully at the mailbox). While it wasn’t exactly a secret, given how popular it was (and still is), the nondescript storefront contrasted with the warm, vibrant atmosphere inside and really heightened the feeling that you were someplace special. That feeling and the loyalty it engenders explains why some of the most popular restaurants in cities across the country remain secretive either on purpose or through indifference.
